SFTP access to your website's files
Every website has SFTP access of its own, locked to that website's directory. For anything larger than the file manager is comfortable with, that is how files get on and off the server — and how you give somebody else upload access without giving them the panel.
The website's own
File transfer.
Under File transfer, a website has a login that reaches its own directory and nothing else. It is SFTP over SSH rather than plain FTP, so what you send is encrypted on the way. Point any ordinary client at the server's hostname with those details.
The account cannot leave the website's own tree. That is the same confinement the site's PHP runs under, and it is why one website's files are not reachable from another's login.
For other people
Extra file transfer accounts.
Extra file transfer accounts gives somebody their own login, optionally into one folder rather than the whole website. A designer who needs to drop files into a theme directory does not need the panel, the database, or the rest of the site — and when the work is finished, removing the account ends their access without changing anything else.
- One account per person, so removing one does not lock out the others
- A folder rather than the website, where that is all somebody needs
- Removing it stops the access immediately
Worth knowing
What does not travel.
Moving a customer to another UHost server brings their file transfer accounts and the folder each may reach, but not their passwords — those belong to the operating system rather than to the panel. The move names the accounts that need a password set, and the website's own file transfer stays off until one is.
If you are bringing a whole website across, SFTP is the slow way round. Moving a website over SSH fetches the files and the database together, and shows you what it found before creating anything.
